Varanasi: A collection of rare and unpublished literary works of Bharatendu Harishchandra, the pioneer of the Hindi Renaissance and one of Kashi’s most celebrated literary figures, was formally launched on the occasion of Rishi Panchami and his birth anniversary.
Titled Bharatendu Kavya Kumudini, the book has been compiled by Dipali Rajkrishna, a descendant of Bharatendu Harishchandra. The volume brings together rare and unpublished compositions by Bharatendu as well as his father, Babu Gopal Chandra ‘Giridhar Das’, offering readers an insight into the literary, devotional and musical traditions of the era.
The collection features compositions associated with Basant, Dhamar, summer, winter and morning, along with devotional hymns, Pushtimargiya verses and Bhishma Stuti. These works reflect various aspects of the religious, cultural and poetic life of the period.
One of the notable highlights of the book is Bharatendu Harishchandra’s Hindi translation of select compositions from Mahakavi Jayadeva’s celebrated Sanskrit work Gita Govinda. The translations offer a glimpse into his engagement with classical Indian poetry and his contribution to bringing traditional literary works to Hindi readers.
The volume also includes material connected with Kashi’s rich musical heritage. Compositions associated with prominent contemporary singers of the city, including Husna Bai, Mallika and Madhavi, have been incorporated into the collection. Among them are verses composed by Bharatendu Harishchandra at the request of Husna Bai.
The inclusion of these works highlights the close relationship between literature, music and devotional culture in Kashi. The collection provides an opportunity to explore the city’s cultural landscape alongside the literary legacy of the Bharatendu era.
